Passenger Notes

  1. Sir Arthur Herbert Dyke Acland, 13th Baronet PC (13 October 1847 – 9 October 1926) was a Liberal politician and political author. He is best remembered for his involvement with educational issues and served as Vice President of the Council of Education under William Ewart Gladstone and the Earl of Rosebery between 1892 and 1895.
  2. John Washington Butler (1875 – 1952) was an American farmer and a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1923-1927. He is most noted for introducing the Butler Act, which prohibited teaching of evolution in public (i.e. state) schools (and which was challenged in the Scopes Trial). He was an admirer of William Jennings Bryan.
  3. William D. Gordon (1858-1917) was a politician and attorney from Michigan who served as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan from 1898 to 1906, and who had previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives, and as Speaker of the House during the 38th and 39th Legislatures.
  4. Cecil B. Hartley was a nineteenth-century biographer and etiquette expert. He is the author of The Gentleman’s Guide to The Gentlemen's Book of Etiquette, and Manual of Politeness: Being a Complete Guide for a Gentleman's Conduct in all his Relations Towards Society (1860), The Life and Times of Colonel Daniel Boone (1860) and The Three Mrs. Judsons (1863).
  5. Sir James Knott, 1st Baronet (31 January 1855 – 8 June 1934) was a shipping magnate (Prince Steam Shipping Company Ltd. - Prince Line) and Conservative Party politician in the north-east of England.
  6. Alfred William McCune (June 11, 1849–March, 28 1927) was an American railroad builder, mine operator, and politician from the state of Utah. Owner of several retail and construction businesses, he helped build the Montana Central Railway in Montana and a portion of the Utah Southern Railroad in Utah, founded the Utah and Pacific Railroad, and built railways in Peru, among other projects. He also owned many profitable mines in Canada, Montana, Peru, and Utah, including the Payne Mine—which paid the most dividends in the history of British Columbia. Late in life, he co-founded the Cerro de Pasco Investment Company, which became the largest copper investor in South America and the largest American investor in Peru until it was nationalized in 1974. He was one of Utah's first millionaires.
  7. General Sir Arthur Henry Fitzroy Paget GCB, GCVO, PC (Ire) (1 March 1851 – 8 December 1928) was a soldier who reached the rank of General and served as Commander-in-Chief, Ireland, where he was partly responsible for the Curragh Incident.

Information for Passengers

Meals will be served in the Saloon at the following times:—

  • Breakfast, from 8:30 to 10;
  • Luncheon at 1:00 pm;
  • the usual Dinner will be served at 7 o'clock, but Passengers who wish to dine at 7:30 or 8 o'clock may arrange parties and order specially prepared Dinner as desired from the Head Waiter, not later than 2 o'clock
  • Supper, if required, must be ordered before 10 o'clock

The Bar will be closed at 11:30 pm and the Smoking Room at Midnight.

The Second Steward has the arrangement of the seats at table.

Divine Service on Sunday at 10:30 am

All enquiries regarding Baggage should be addressed to the Baggage Master.

Steamer Chairs may be hired from the Deck Steward at a cost of 4s. for the voyage.

The Company is not responsible for theft if valuables or money are kept in the Staterooms. The same should be placed in charge of the Purser for deposit in his safe, and a receipt will be given on the Company's form. As no charge is made for carriage the Company can not accept any responsibility for loss or damage, however arising, but Passengers can protect themselves by insurance.

Passengers should obtain a receipt on the Company's form for any additional Passage Money or Freight paid on board.

The Purser is authorized to exchange money at the following rates. He will give American money for English at $4.80 to the pound sterling and English money for U.S. Currency at £1 sterling for $4.95.

The Surgeon is authorized to make customary charges, subject to the approval of the Commander, for treating any Passengers at their request for any illness not originating on board the ship. In the case of sickness contracted on board no charge will be made and medicine will be provided free.

Passengers are notified that dogs cannot be landed in Great Britain unless a license has previously been procured from the Board of Agriculture, London. Forms of license must be obtained by direct application to the Department before the dog is taken on board.

Special trains are run between Riverside Station, Liverpool, and Euston Station, London, in connection with the arrival and departure of these Steamers. All the other Railway Stations in Liverpool are within a few minutes' drive of the Prince's Stage.

Wireless telegram Rates

United States.—The minimum Marconi Rate, via Sea Gate, Babylon, Sagaponack or South Wellfleet (Cape Cod), or through the medium of a passing steamer and one of these stations, is 8s. 4d. for ten words. Each extra word 6d.; text only counted; address and signature free; land charges additional; all fees must be prepaid.

The minimum rate via Siasconsett or Cape Race, or through the medium of a passing steamer and these stations is 12s. 6d. for ten words. Each extra word 9d.; text only counted; address and signature free; land charges additional; all fees must be prepaid.

The minimum Marconi Rate via Sable Island, or through the medium of a passing steamer and this station is 16s. 8d. for ten words. Each extra word Is.; text only counted; address and signature free; land charges additional; all charges mutt be prepaid.

United Kingdom.—The minimum Marconi Rate, via Crookhaven, or other stations in the United Kingdom, or through the medium of a passing steamer, is 6s. for twelve words. Each extra word 6d.; every word in address, text, and signature counted; land charges additional; all fees must be prepaid.

Ship To Ship.—Minimum Rate, Est. for twelve words. Each extra word 6d.; every word in address, text, and signature counted, and all fees must be prepaid.

Ship's Orchestra

The " Mauretania " carries an orchestra of highly-trained musicians, which will play at the undermentioned times and places :—

  • Second Class Dining Saloon : 10:00 to 11:00 am
  • First Class Dining Saloon : 1:00 to 2:10:00 pm
  • Second Class Dining Saloon : 9:30 to 4:00 p.m
  • First Class Dining Saloon : 7:10 to 8:45:00 pm
  • First Class Drawing Room : 9:00 to 10:00 pm

This arrangement may be altered as circumstances necessitate.

A Stenographer and Typist is on board for the convenience of Passengers.

This Steamer is Fitted with Marconi's System of Wireless Telegraphy, Also with The Submarine Signalling Apparatus.
