Escape from Europe - The SS Manhattan Story

This passenger list was undated, likely due to the unknown departure date at the time of printing. The commander of the Manhattan, Captain George V. Richardson, would become a veteran of two world wars and, at the time of this voyage, was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Naval Reserves.

Captain Richardson was one of the United States Lines' best known and most popular masters. He retired at the end of 1949 serving 38 years at sea, 30 of them as a master.

Captain Richards commanded several of the USLs largest ocean liners, including the luxury liner SS Manhattan in addition to the SS President Roosevelt and the SS President Harding in transatantic service.

Prior to his service with the United States Lines, he was the commander of the SS Virginia and SS California, popular cruise vessels of the Panbama Pacific Line, a subsidiary of USL providing intercoastal service. [Note 1]

In October 1939 Manhattan carried passengers, mostly Americans, from England (then at war with Germany) to New York. On 4 February 1940, the ship was seized by British forces in Gibraltar and released after 390 sacks of mail bound for Germany were confiscated. From January 1940 until Italy's entry into World War II in June 1940 she sailed between New York and Genoa.

Barred from North European ports by the Neutrality Act, the United States Lines' SS Manhattan sailed from New York on 30 December 1939 to begin ia new service between the United States and Italy, a neutral country at that time. Six days after leaving New York, a British destroyer stopped the Manhattan in Gibraltar.

Officers of the British Contraband Control came aboard to search the ship's papers. The Manhattan's Captain, George V. Richardson went ashore at Gibraltar to protest to British authorities and the American consul. The ship was detained for fourty hours while British sailors removed 235 bags of mail addressed to Germany and adjacent neutral countries.

On the return voyage, the British stopped the Manhattan again for nine hours while searching for German exports. [Note 2]

On 12 July 1940, The SS Manhattan transported passengers fleeing Europe from Lisbon to New York City; among them was Eugene Bullard, African-American combat pilot in World War I. [Note 3]

This book is on the movement of 15,000 Jews in the second and third years of World War II. The period is the 22nd of June 1940 to the 31st of December 1941. This was from the French armistice to the departure of the last civilian ship for New York harbor. Ultimately the three people who made it possible were FDR who allowed the Jews an asylum from Europe, Hitler who wanted the Jews out of his domain and, above all, Francisco Franco who received the Jews sent by Hitler and sent them to the Americas. For more information, read "Coming to America: Refugees from the Holocaust," by Matthias Blum of Queen's University Belfast, and Claudia Rei of Vanderbilt University, published on 18 April 2016. Abstract: The large-scale persecution of Jews during World War II generated massive refugee movements. Using data from 20,441 predominantly Jewish passengers from several European countries traveling from Lisbon to New York between 1940 and 1942, we analyze the last wave of refugees to escape the Holocaust and verify the validity of height as a proxy for human and health capital. We further show this episode of European migration displays well-known features of migrant self-selection: early migrants were taller than late migrants, a large migrant stock reduces migrant selectivity, and economic barriers to migration apply. Our findings show that Europe experienced substantial losses in human and health capital, whereas the US benefitted from the immigration of European refugees.
