North German Lloyd - 1896 - Photographs (Berliner Gewerbe-Ausstellung)

A Brochure features Photographs of Interior and exterior views of the steamships of the North German Lloyd based out of Bremen, Germany. Pictures of the SS Kaiser Wilhelm II, Dining Saloon, Children's Room, Ladies Saloon and Lounge are included.

The North German Lloyd SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Zweite is, without a doubt, the most luxurious liner afloat, presenting many novel features of interest. She is the first liner to have four separate sets of engines instead of two, developing 38,000 HP. She is expected to break all records and prove herself the fastest of the ocean flyers. She was recently placed on the Atlantic ferry.

Regarding passenger accommodation, she has two tastefully fitted "Imperial suites," for which one pays GBP 400 a voyage from Bremen to New York, or vice rent 1. Each contains dining, drawing, bed, and bathrooms opening one out of the other, and they are always booked up far ahead.

The Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe occupied one of these suites on their homeward voyage. There are eight "state apartments" with sitting, bed, and hath rooms: eight "state cabins" with bathrooms, besides first-class cabins.

The first-class saloon is the most splendidly decorated and the largest on any liner. It is 108 ft. long, 69 ft. wide, and will seat 554 passengers. The white galleries with angle balconies around the light shaft remind one of an opera house. Electric punkahs and radiators always maintain a pleasant temperature.

There are two Vienna cafes on the fore and after part of the awning deck for those who require refreshment between meals. I fere one can partake of the various savories and sweets so dear to the German. In contrast, in the one for non-smokers, a most tastefully decorated apartment, ladies congregate for tea, coffee, ices, cakes, and scandal.

The children's saloon is a feature welcomed by bachelors and old maids. Here the youngsters can enjoy themselves to their hearts' content—the walls of this playroom arc decorated with pictures from Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales. The smoke-room, library, typewriting room, where lady shorthand writers are at work, and drawing-room are all fitted up in the most luxurious and artistic style. The decoration is worthy of a king's palace.

The ship also contains a safe-deposit department, four kitchens, a post office, a wireless telegraphy outfit, etc. She carries two doctors and an apothecary. There are seven decks (orlop, lower, main, upper, lower and upper promenade, and awning or boat), a double bottom, and nineteen watertight compartments. The illustrations are indebted to the North German Lloyd Company.
