From the Publisher
The 15 years from 1936 to 1950 are covered here in the fourth volume of the series. This was the period that saw the lifting of the worldwide recession of the early '30s and the introduction of the largest passenger vessel of all time, the famous Cunarder Queen Elizabeth, and the Wilhelm Gustloff, which was considered to be the first ship built for cruising in the modern sense.
The Second World War had a devastating effect on the many ships under construction, and a number were never completed or refitted for military purposes.
A large section deals with the troop transports, which were standard types of ships commissioned expressly by the Americans to serve during the latter part of the war years.
With the war's end, several new passenger liners were laid down. They were soon in service alongside the surviving pre-war veterans on the main shipping routes.
Although not then appreciated, this was the beginning of an era in which the passenger liner's dominance was quickly threatened by the airplane, whose speed and efficiency would soon make it a strong yet important competitor.

From the Back Cover
This Invaluable and carefully researched book - the fourth in a series of five - is an important statistical, historical, and pictorial reference source for shipping enthusiasts, historians, and marine engineers.
About this Series
The five volumes in this outstanding series aim to present, for the first time in international maritime literature, a work covering all passenger ships to date of over 10,000 gross registered tons, with relevant technical and historical data, including photographs of the vessels.
As with previous volumes, each vessel's historical and technical data has been painstakingly researched and clearly presented. Arnold Kludas, formerly a technical engineer in a Hamburg shipping yard, is now working in the library of the Deutsche Schiffahrtsmuseum in Bremerhaven.

About the Author
Arnold Kludas, former technical engineer in a Hamburg shipyard and maritime adviser for a German publishing firm, is now working in the Deutsche Schiffahrtsmuseum, the equivalent of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.
His meticulous research in authenticating and continually updating the entries of all the ships has resulted in the published English language volumes being received with high acclaim and praise.
In the words of Sea Breezes, 'this is a series well worth the trouble of translation - an excellent service to ship lovers and maritime historians.
