CAPTAIN POTTER, of the Etruria, joined the Cunard Line in 1886, and secured his first command, the Sylvania, ten years later. Since that time he has navigated. for more or less lengthy periods, a dozen or fifteen liners, his more recent changes being from the Ultonia to the Aurania. then to the Saxonia, and lastly into the Etruria, sister ship to the Umbria.

Mr. Alexander McGregor, in presiding at the complimentary dinner to Captain Thomas Potter, of the “Ivernia’’ on February 18, said, addressing Captain Potter, “You Englishmen do not strike twelve the first time. In prosperity you are moody and dumpish, but in adversity you are grand.” Acting Mayor Ballantyne welcomed the Captain in behalf of the City, and assured him of the cordial feeling that all Bostonians hold toward the Cunard Line. Among the other speakers were Rev. James Todd, D. D., and Rev. James Alexander. (Boston City Bulletin, Vol. V, No. 6, 1 March 1911)
