Minnekahda (1917) Atlantic Transport Line

Built by Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Belfast, Ireland. Tonnage: 17,281. Dimensions: 620' x 66'. Triple-screw, 16 knots. Triple expansion engines on outer screws and one low pressure steam turbine on center screw. Four masts and one funnel. Four passenger decks. Notes: Converted to emigrant carrier for 2,000 passengers. Ran in this type of service between Danzig and New York for the American Line. Transferred to Atlantic Transport Line in 1924. Converted to tourist class ship with accommodation for 750 passengers; Placed in New York-London service. Fate: Broken up by ship-breakers at Dalmuir on the Clyde in 1936.

This vessel was on order when the war commenced, and construction on her was held up owing to more urgent war work. When the need for transports and food ships became critical, she was hurriedly completed and went into commission in 1917.

In 1920 she was refitted at Quincy, Mass., U.S., and transferred to American Registry by the Atlantic Transport Company of West Virginia. Her accommodation was reorganized, and she was given accommodation for 750 third-class passengers; she proved very popular with travelers of moderate means, especially among young college students who wanted a cheap trip to Europe during their vacation as part of their education.

The Atlantic Transport has always gone in for one class of passengers. The two bigger ships, Minnetonka and Minnewaska, carried first class only; the sailings were alternate first class and third class.

For the third class service, the Red Star liner Zeeland was converted to third class only to run alongside the Minnekahda and was renamed Minnesota.

When the Atlantic Transport Line fleet was dispersed, she was transferred to the American Line's Panama Pacific Line service from New York to San Francisco. On that service, she was later joined by the Belgenland of the Red Star Line, which was renamed Columbia.
