Synopsis

Examines the definition of American nationality as it was debated during WWI in relation to the Norwegian-American experience in the upper midwest.

From the Publication

The third volume in Topical Studies, Ethnicity Challenged, examines and interprets issues that concern the very essence of American society — the definition of American nationality — as these were debated during a distressful time in the nation’s history, the period of World War I, which in the words of John Higham “called forth the most strenuous nationalism and the most pervasive nativism that the United States had known.”

Those who advanced objections in defense of ethnic pluralism and against the attack on hyphens may be likened to voices in the wilderness. Their arguments went unheeded as the quest for national solidarity increasingly gave rise to proscriptive measures against non-English groups in the population.

Dr. Chrislock focuses major attention on Norwegian Americans in the Upper Midwest, but within a broad context; his book thus becomes an insightful case study of the effect of national policies and movements on a particular and distinctive region of the country.

Intertwined in the question of loyalty is the prevailing negative attitude of that time toward political radicalism; American patriotism demanded uniformity not only of cultural and linguistic expression but also of political thought.
