The remarkable story of a young woman's journey from Oslo to the American West in 1916.  In this book she tells her stories.

Many are taken verbatim from her own journals, calendar pages, and letters.  Others were written as she told them to Florence Ekstrand. Anna is the inspiring story of one pioneer woman's courage and zest for living.

It is also a remarkable account of a brief, but dramatic, period of Western history.

From the Back Cover

In 1916, Anna Gottormsen Hought left a comfortable life in Oslo to homestead, alone, on the windswept prairies of northern Montana. Today, at 99, her memories of the life that followed are as vibrant and alive as the twinkle in her eyes.

In this book she tells her stories. Many are taken from her own journals, calendar pages, and letters. Others were written as she told them to Florence Ekstrand.

Her memory is extraordinary and the stories evocative of another era. Sun-filled days of a Norwegian childhood. The exciting days of a young working girl in Oslo. The thrill of an Atlantic crossing. Then, the sight of the one-room shack on the prairie that was to become her home.

As a single woman homesteader, Anna began to live her brave life on the prairie. She set up housekeeping and began to “make things nice”. She proceeded to fence, beside her brother John, 640 acres without the aid of horses or wagons. She married. She bore children and suffered through the death of one.

But, today she can still remember the fun, the excitement and the good friends and neighbors that the pioneer life brought her.

Anna is the inspiring story of one pioneer woman’s courage and zest for living. It is also a remarkable account of a brief, but dramatic, period of Western history.
