From the Back Cover

Le Havre-New York

"At 2:35 p.m. on February 9, 1942, a workman's blowtorch set fire to the first-class lounge. There was no extinguisher nearby. The fire bucket was accidentally knocked over. The U.S. Coastguard on duty on the bridge could not find the button for the alarm klaxons.

The automatic fire alarm linking the ship with the New York Fire Department had been disconnected on January 13. A policeman on the pier was hailed, by which time the fire had spread to the smoking room and the long gallery.

At around 8 p.m., they announced that the fire had been controlled. Under the weight of the tons of water that had built up in SS Normandie's tanks, the flagship of the French Line heeled over 80° to port, between Pier 88 and Pier 90. The Normandie was no more."
