United American Lines History and Ephemera
The United American Lines, aka American Shipping and Commercial Corporation, was founded by W. Averell Harriman in 1920. Harriman entered into agreements with the Hamburg-America Line (HAPAG) to handle transatlantic passenger traffic between Hamburg - Southampton - Cherbourg - New York. The Steamship line was sold to HAPAG in 1926.

Since 1922, United American Lines (Harriman Line) operated cabin class passenger service between Hamburg and New York via Southampton, Boulogne, and Cherbourg. The also ran three passenger vessels of the third-class in the New York-Hamburg run.

The United American Lines has its principal steamers, the Resolute, Reliance, and Cleveland, under the Panama Flag. The first two, which have been in operation more than a year, are firmly established in the trade.

By the time the spring rush of travel to Europe begins, two fine new liners will be flying the American flag in the North Atlantic, viz., the steamers Resolute and Reliance, recently added to the fleet of the United American Lines, to be operated by them in fort-nightly service between New York and Hamburg, with calls at English and French Channel ports. In the spring of this year, the United American Lines began a service for first, second and third class passengers between New York and Hamburg with calls at the channel ports with the fine steamers Resolute and Reliance purchased from the Royal Holland Lloyd Line. The company is today operating 32 vessels of approximately 250,000 gross tons and is one of the largest operating units of privately owned tonnage under the American flag.
