At the beginning of 1918, both the Allied and Central Powers suffered severely from over three years of ongoing, attritional warfare. The exit of Russia from the war following the 1917 revolution might have been a crucial blow against the Allies, allowing Germany to concentrate on the Western Front. Still, probably the most decisive factor was the United States' entry into the war on the side of the Allies.

Although some in the Allied camp might regard America's entry unduly delayed, especially in the light of the length of time which elapsed between their declaration of war and the committing of substantial numbers of troops to combat, the effect was profound.
