Le Paquebot France de la Compagnie Générale Transatlantique

FROM PARIS TO NEW YORK

There was little that seventy-five years a regular service was established between France and the United States. Indeed, circa 1835, which was organized the first service boats outpost between Le Havre and New York, using wooden sailboats American, a gauge maximum of 450 tons. How far we have come since that time so close to us, in fact, that we now appear to be very distant when contemplating the majestic ship with the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique just provide our marine trade.

The success of the first attempt encouraged the owners to build units largest tonnage. We live together appear to tall ships of up to 2,000 tons.

The English have inaugurated a service between Britain and the United States, a regular service was established between Le Havre and New York. On June 24, 1848, the port of Le Havre received the first ship of this service. 11 beat American Pavilion.

The French Government found that we can not abandon the foreign monopoly of transatlantic relations. The Maritime Union offered to link France with New York, the West Indies and Mexico. But having been able to raise the necessary capital, it has ceded its rights Compagnie General Maritime, which was to become the Company Génèrale Transatlantique.

The Convention of 1865 establishes that the cruise service from New York would have a speed of 11 knots.

Since that historic date, the Company has provided Gênérale Transatlantique its line from Le Havre to New York vessels increasingly larger, more comfortable, faster.

In 1864, Washington had only 107 metres in length, 3,300 horse power and a tonnage of 3,554 tons. America, commissioned in 1873, had not increased power, but its length had been brought to 120 meters and its tonnage to 4,636 tonnes. In 1883, it was Normandy, 144 meters long, 6,500 horses and 6,500 tonnes, and in 1886, Brittany, 155 meters, 9,000 horses and 7,315 tonnes.

Then came the wake of its major units: in 1891, the ship Touraine, along 163 meters, with 9,161 tons and 12,000 horse power, in 1900, Lorraine, 177 meters long, 22,000 horses and 11,874 tonnes in 1906 , La Provence, 190 meters long, 30,000 horses and 14,744 tons. Finally, there are less than three years, the site at Penhoët, in Saint-Nazaire, put work on the "France'', 220 meters, 45,000 horses and 24,838 tons, a veritable floating city, which will feature high the image of France . packet bot "France" is a pure wonder. You may judge the case, you want to visit with us.

Le Paquebot "France" a son premier départ pour New York (20 avril 1912)

The steamship France of the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique has its first start for New York (April 20, 1912).

THE BOARDING HALL

The train was stopped in front of transatlantic Basin Eure at Le Havre. Cars, a crowd rushes, while vans to hasten porters… The first surprise waiting for the passenger. Instead of the traditional gateway where people hâtait, we see a tent-landing, spacious and very well installed. This innovation makes time to say goodbye less painful. It seems you go take the train to somewhere next station. It was more gap between the continent and immobile "vale walking." And already, before departure, there is a concern to the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique to ensure that all its passengers commodites the most complete, the desire for them at the same time what we will call:

The Comfort individual for the cabin and meals, and the Comfort, on the ship and in all places.

Salon de l'Appartement de Grand Luxe

COMFORT POINTS

LET US PENETRATE in the liner. The ship is a veritable maze, a Noah's ark, where it is most crossings; how to retrieve his cabin in this difficult to recognize, at least at the beginning of the house of a thousand floors? The maitre d'hotel, you immediately appoint a guide that you avoid unnecessary races.

While only through bridges, your cicerone leads you to your home, perhaps you will ask yourself this agonizing question, which harcéle all who sail for a long voyage:

"Will I sound booth!" There is no need to worry about today.

All cabins are good aboard the "France".

You will be able to judge:

FIRST CLASS ACCOMMODATIONS

The Cabin. The liner "France" contains 207 first class cabins and 51 cabins mixed first spread across the bridges-walk (73), Senior (109) and higher (25 and 51 mixed). The originality of these special booths lies in the composition of the walls. In the wood has been replaced, in most cases, the fibro-cement. He was employed as little paint as possible, so that - benefit most welcome - no smell can be deduced from these apartments. The passenger found in his cabin charm of his home.

Over these bunks stacked and classic! From quaint brass beds have been replaced.

A number of booths are equipped with two beds, others one, while a few, some forty or so, are equipped with a sofa bed.

Salle 'a Manger de l'Appartement de Grand Luxe.

Dining Room of Luxury apartment.

The various booths promenade deck and the main deck are decorated in the modern taste, and their ornamentation has pretty Irises referring topics fields, and woods of new gasoline.

The Company has completed General Transatlantique sumptuous these facilities by adding at most booths, with a water closet and a bathroom. Many of these booths are also equipped with a toilet. We note that such facilities do not exist on the most recently built megaships.

Finally, an electric clock will each measure at any time, the elapsed time.

Luxury Apartments. Bearing in mind that the line from New York is attended by high society, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique wanted to do even better. She install four luxury apartments, and a luxury apartment, with no liner could not offer the equivalent.

The luxury apartment extends over a length of more than twenty meters to starboard, in the living room and mixed Gallery deck tent.

Salon privé d'un Appartement de Luxe.

Private lounge of a luxury apartment.

It enters through an anteroom, which gives the bathroom and the toilet Here, clear and gay, the Board Directory, a comprehensive salon Louis XVI, which does not déparerait one of our castles Touraine. A corridor on which opens the office, connecting the living room to the dining room with a magnifying glass walls of ash, in the style of the Empire, and finally at the end of homelessness, cozy and intimate, Louis XVI room invites to a peaceful rest. This room has, itself, a bathroom and a toilet.

The luxury apartment can accommodate six people. It contains, in effect, a double bed, one single bed and three sofabeds. There is no doubt that all the Kings of the American Industry will vie for the honour of occupying this house or princely art allied to the most refined.

The opposite of this apartment, the port side, two luxury apartments, less affluent, but no less fun, include a Louis XVl a room with a lounge Directory, another Louis XVl a room with a lounge Louis XV , Fort aristocratic homeless, and where you will feel much more at home than in the larger hotels. Both have bathroom, toilet, closet, all these details of the contemporary home that make it so attractive to us, and the elevator dishes provide communications with the offices below.

At the front of the promenade deck, two other apartments, decorated, but of lesser importance, have been constructed.

Coin de la Salle à Manger des Premières Classes

Corner of the Dining Room of First Class

The Dining Halls. We love happy monumental dining rooms. It seems that digestion should be hindered by exiguité premises. A low ceiling does not encourage the appetite. Patrons at first classes of the "France" will not have this feeling. Compagnie Générale Transatlantique spared them a real surprise. Imagine a huge hall, occupying three tween the ship. And measuring, as a result, eight metres in height. The hall itself is divided into two floors, 350 passengers can take a seat at meal times.

In the center of the hall, sets up a cupola, which support of the pilasters. A splendid staircase ensures the connection between the two stages. Decoration was empruntee with the old hotel of the Count de Toulouse, whom Robert Decotte decorated, son-in-law of Mansard, the famous architect of the Louvre. One will admire the sculpture of wood, the drawing of the skirtings, as well as the powerful colour of the central panel which frames the interior staircase. This work with the tonalities hot, luminous, represente the French Grace, and carries the signature of the eminent painter the Key. The same artist painted the ceiling of the cupola which evokes, with as much charm than of poetry, the great areas of France.

Breaking with the tradition of large tables, cheres the old liners, the Company has adopted the method of small tables, more family, more intimate, and where one can isolate themselves in the middle of the community.

The offices and kitchens of the Palais de Gargantua are immediately at the rear of the dining room less thermometers allow for a high degree of accuracy and perfect speed in the service of food for passengers.

Assemble-Dishes. For the patients, like for the service of the breakfasts of the morning, it was established with each bridge a particular office, communicating by hoists and telephones with one of the principal offices. This practice would certainly be very popular among passengers.

Finally, for those whom the sea air affects easily, a bar at the American has been installed on the main deck.

LIVING ROOMS OF THE PONT-TENTE

The deck is occupied tent over a length of 150 metres, with a long list of shows, which we can say, without fear of being denied, they refer rather halls of a royal palace that the common facilities of a cruise ship.

Compagnie Générale Transatlantique really wanted it was difficult to do better. Maybe we could earn more gilding, grounds, furniture, it would, in any case, impossible to accommodate more art and the skill of the most magnificent facilities.

Cabine de Luxe

De luxe cabin.

The Descent Central. It is thought that comes mind when considering the overall decorative form by the upper tier of the Great Descent. It is, indeed, in the midst of a colonnade, supporting a dome oval, ironwork finely gateway.

Signs of green marble, doors ironwork around the colonnade. Four senior gilded bronze reliefs mercury enhance their attributes the walls of the rotunda. The baskets of flowers to pay their electric light in the piêce. The flights of rescalier giving access to the lower floors are surrounded by a wrought-iron handrail. In the cage of the staircase, a statue in bronze, "France'', is in a niche, on a pedestal veined red. The work of sculptor Nelson has great pace, and still contributes to the beauty of this monumental staircase.

Cabine de Premiere Classe, avec Bains.

Cabin of the Premiere Class, with Bains.

Conversation Salon. Forward, two tunnels leading to the chat room, which is one of the most elegant that we can conceive. Basically, a magnificent fireplace is topped by the portrait, by foot, by Louis XIV, by Hyacinthe Rigaud, a copy of a startling truth from table stored at the Louvre. On the coasts of the canvas, we can see four beautiful portraits: Princess de la Tour-duPin, Madame de Maintenon, Henriette England and the Duchess of Burgundy. It could not be better evoke the century of great King.

Faced with the Louis XIV of Rigaud, a large table, according to Van der Meulen (Musée de Versailles), representing Louis XIV returning from a hunting party in the gardens of Versailles.

Opulent armchairs, becoming shepherdesses of great style are laid out for amazement of the eyes and the conveniences of the conversation. There here seats covered with tapestries of Aubusson, there, we see velvets of garden Genoa, still, of the Damas purple. In front of the chimney, notice this seat in X borrowed from the furniture of Versailles. All this furnishing arises highly on the blue carpet of king who chokes the noise of the steps.

Do not forget to lift their heads, to contemplate the central dome, so graceful and delicate frescoes Boucher (Musée de Fontainebleau), Dawn and Dusk.

The Library. At bottom, and on the right, silent and collected, the library opens, the Regency style, and whose walls are disappearing under the carved wood paneling. This place will be withdrawn much appreciated by those who like to think in the company of our friends, books.

The Typing. Those who do not have time to stroll or meditate, which have copies to run, find a left, in a small office, the typist, whose good offices are often claimed.

Salon Mixte des Premières Classes

Salon Mixte des Premières Classes

The mixed Living room. Let us reconsider our steps towards the Great Descent. Two bathed galleries of clearness, make it possible to reach the mixed living room, of Regence style. The eye rests there on painted, green and gilded wood skirtings, and pink marble columns.

These sights of Italian landscapes go back to 1774, and carry the signature of the painter of Laroix. In the center of the living room, a quadruple settee with table out of H was installed. The armchairs are covered with leather or velvet. A grand piano, tables of play and to write supplement the furnishing of this hall, where the sun enters to full rays. Let us cross galleries of communication in style Trianon Louis XVl, fresh like gardens.

Cabine de Premiere Classe

Cabin of the Premiere Class.

Moorish Living Room . A stop is essential on delicious the small Moorish living room, where the smokers will be able to come to be refreshed. To this end, the foresight of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique has spared a marble fountain, which gushed water ice. The walls of this small are covered with mosaics, floral arabesques, and wood panels. Over the source, which are in a double basin, hangs a mural, Algeria, the artist orientalist Poisson. This sculpture, which appeared in the lounge, and was highly praised, a lot of character and life.

Fumoir des Secondes Classes

Second Class Smoking Room

Fumoir et Terrasse. Continuing backwards, we will reach the Smoking Room, which presides Colbert, whose portrait adorns the veined marble fireplace. This piece of vast dimensions, is, as the show mixed Regency style, with carved wood panelling. The chairs, velvet green water, cast a clear and joyous note. The ice and water blend high on the walls.

This part communicates directly with a terrace, turned towards the back of the ship. Broad bays, which one can seal by means of thick and mobile panes, let wander the glance on the vastness. A trellis-work of a tender green in two colours, decorates the partition. By good weather, one can there smoke as in the open air, and if the bad weather prevails, one can face it, with the shelter of the highly rectified ices.

Elevators. On right-hand side and on the left of the staircase of the Great Descent, one can see grids extremely artistically "ferronnées." These grids close the cage of the two elevators which serve the various floors of this gigantic house.

Salle de Jeux des Enfants

Children's Play Room

Children's Room. The children have not been forgotten by the Compagnie General Transatlantique, the mother of all. There was, first, to ensure that passengers were not bothered by the cries or races of children, and that, on the other hand, they could occupy their leisure without too much trouble.

Two parts are reserved for the turbulent youth. On the boat deck at the end of the lobby, and completely isolated from the latter, a summer built a game room, or Guignol give performances daily. This piece will not be the least happy of the ship.

At the upper dining room has been installed dining child. Paintings in glass are the stories that were dear to our young years, tales and legends blue gold. Little Red Riding Hood will close with Ali-Baba, and we see Mr. Lustucru make a bad party chat of the Mother Michel.

The Hair Salons. The life of megaships is essentially mundane, especially when it comes evening. Ladies and gentlemen often need the assistance of the hairdresser. Two hairdressers very modern were installed. While furniture is mahogany.

Second Class Accommodations

To describe the facilities of second class should, in truth, to start studying the various premises where life is flowing into cabins, or living in the apartments. We will qualify a single word, that all include: the wealth and comfort of second class on the "France" corresponds to the wealth and comfort of first class on the old liners.

Descente de la Salle a Manger des Premieres Classes.

Descent of Dining room First Classes.

The dining room, large and cheerful, lies in the 'tween Deck.

It is connected by a magnificent descent whose levels are decorated in the style Regence, in the lounge and the smoking room at the rear of the ship, on the main deck.

The salon is in a half-tone. The background is in the range of blue and gold, and furniture are green-of water. Seats on the smoking room, velvet gray, blend nicely with the signs of nuance lemon. Any decoration was very neat.

The cabins are much more spacious than the other second liners. The bathrooms were multiplied to all floors.

Finally, a hairdresser Special is installed on the upper deck, near the Second Class information desk.

Third Class Accommodations

Finally, the third passenger were also common premises, and, in particular, dining rooms, a smoking room and a snack bar. This class has its passenger service with its special food "cambuses," cuisine, completely separated from the service of the first and second classes.

Grand Hall des Premières Classes

COMFORT GENERAL

We are accustomed, with the refinements of modern times, in all places find the same facilities as we meet with us. Compagnie Générale Transatlantique did not wish it was otherwise on the "France", and it has tried to make their stay to the passengers on each day as pleasant as possible.

THE SHIP

THE SOUL. To conduct a colossus as the "France", to run its various agencies, to ensure its rhythmic pulsations, it takes a small army, which gives the command leadership, which he maintains uniformity.

La Timonerie.

The Wheelhouse.

The captain is assisted by a captain in the second, four lieutenants, a pilot, two doctors and three commissioners.

The Giant Liner . "France" is a giant Well. Its length is 217 m. 63, the width of 23 meters, and the height is 21 m. 50 from the keel up to the bridge where the craft. Initially, the draught of the ship is 9 m. 10, and his journey to this draught, reached 27,190 tons.

The liner has eight decks, including seven equipped with facilities for passengers or officers. The last deck is reserved for passenger baggage, food onboard and merchandise. Under the last deck lies a cargo hold.

The total number of people who may be on-board figure to be 2,558: 535 passengers in first class, 442 second-class, third-class 950 and 631 people for the services of captain and passengers.

The Brain. Gateway commander is really the mastermind of this huge body. From there, go all the nerves that involve active bodies of the ship. Below are the panels of machinery, rudder, the various machineries of the bridge, front and rear, while others provide manoeuvre whistles. Still others provide for the safety of passengers. When any danger, the commander may, in its discretion, close all doors to the watertight bulkheads.

The units are of a very different nature: mechanical, electrical or hydraulic. The bridge also has speaker phones, devices for optical signals. An indicator Special ensures the proper functioning of navigation lights; clock power sends an hour in the lounges and cabins.

Here is the chart room, with its nautical library, stopwatches and sextants. Finally, a room of silence allows the hearing bells submarine for the days of fog. We are amazed that so many things can take place in such a short space.

Groupe de Dynamos.

Group of Dynamos.

The Lung and Heart. Nothing more curious and more instructive than a visit to the "lungs" and the "heart" of the colossus. The ocean liner "France" is operated by four propellers. His plane Evaporation consists of eleven boilers eight homes each, eight boilers to four homes, a total of 120 homes giving a surface grid of 222 square metres.

Coal consumption, for a 140-hour crossing is 4,000 tons. The consumption of fresh water must reach nearly 800 tons. The power thus obtained is 45,000 horses, and the production of steam per hour to 270,000 kilos.

To avoid the need to bring more than a thousand tons of fresh water for the supply of boilers, the vessel is equipped with boilers evaporators in which sea water is distilled.

Une Chaufferie

A Boiler room.

The machines are calling not only for coal and water, but also in the air. This air is provided by sixteen electric fans, a total flow in service, 530,000 cubic metres per hour. The amount of air weighs 690 tons and is twenty-three times the weight of coal. The flow of fans continued for the 140 hours of crossing corresponds to a total weight of 96,500 tons of air.

Air is drawn by large wells, around chimneys, in eight ventilation rooms located above boilers, then, it is returned through heaters, covering its temperature to 300 degrees, and finally sent on the fence.

It could, if necessary, serve these fans venting of the ship.

In that case, they would be likely to renew the total volume of air, including bunkers and holds ten times per hour, which is equivalent to twenty times per hour for the spaces.

The steamship engine itself comprises four turbines each placed on a line of trees: a high-pressure turbine, one medium and two low pressure. There is, moreover, the reverse, two high-pressure turbine and two low pressure. The turbines comprise 618,300 finned copper, of which 290,700 fixed and 327,600 mobile. These winglets placed end to end would be a ribbon of 109 km.

This figure gives an idea of adjusting considerable work that requires the construction of a device that power.

For the first time, on the "France" uses a driving turbine apparatus with triple relaxation.

To give an idea of the power of the turbines of "France", we will point out that the interior bore (inside diameter of the pipe) which joins together the average with the low pressure, is nearly two meters (1m 930). Thanks to a very wise device, the ship being on the way free, it is possible, by only one operation, at the same time to put the four propellers in reverse gear, in order to avoid an imminent collision.

The whole of the driving apparatus is placed in two compartments, and one of these compartments could be invaded without for that the remainder of the driving apparatus being paralysed. One would be only satisfied to work with two propellers.

The lighting and the driving force behind the board will be provided by two power stations, each with two turbo-dynamos of 400 horses.

The Steamer France offers this feature for failing castle-of-Water. The pumps deport water, cold or hot, in tanks loaded with compressed air at the top, where they are returned under pressure.

For service of hot water, there is a continuous flow of piping, and returning to the point of departure, fawn to prevent cooling water before use by passengers.

In addition, finally, as for simplifying the service of boiler, coal is divided in four groups of boilers, and to enable both the general boiler rooms, machinery and board, it was spared in the Last tween, a broad corridor that connections between various compartments.

Tableau de Manceuvre des Turbines.

Table of Steerage of Turbines.

There is no need done to open doors that are at the bottom of the fifteen watertight bulkheads that divide the ship into sixteen watertight compartments.

This great service corridor contains the necessary auxiliary equipment at the service of the machines, to life on board and the safety of ships.

It provides, at the rear, in stores and supply posts reserved for drivers and civilian personnel of the crew, and at the front, in positions of the deck crew and some of the emigrants.

THE "BELLY" THE MONSTER
