  Sexual Customs in Rural Norway:
A Nineteenth-Century Study
Translation of: Om sædeligheds-tilstanden i Norge

Eilert Sundt, Sexual Customs in Rural Norway: A Nineteenth-Century Study Translation of: Om sædeligheds-tilstanden i Norge, Translated and Edited by Odin W. Anderson, First Edition, © 1993, Iowa State University Press, Ames, Iowa, Hardcover, 296 Pages, 0-8138-0588-0, 306.7'09481'09034--dc20. A compelling portrait of rural Norway of the 1850s. It shattered the contemporary romantic depiction of Norwegian peasants. Originally published in Norway in 1857, it is not fiction, it is real life, a study by a sociologist who went into rural Norway and wrote about the common people. There is nothing to compare to this information. The translation is excellent and very readable. Do not let the title mislead you, this book is not about sex, it is about life in rural Norway, what the people wore, what they ate, how they lived.

  Not So Far From Home

Roald Steen, Not So Far From Home © 1993 North American Heritage Press, Minot, North Dakota, Soft Cover, 227 Pages, 0-942323-20-3. This book is composed of a selection of articles written for Norway Times by the author. As a native of Bergen, Norway, the author provides an insider's view of many little-known, but interesting places, customs and events. As for his new Norway, the heritage-commemorating activities and accomplishments of the Norwegian-Americans are reported with objectivity and a good measure of pride.

Book Description
Its easy to find Norway. Its that long, spoon-shaped country in northwest Europe. But Norway Times correspondent Roald Steen knows that Norway can also be found elsewhere . . . right smack-dab in the heart of America! When the thousands of Norwegian immigrants sailed west to America in the 1800s and early 1900s they brought along not only their material belongings but also their Nordic traditions and heritage. This rich ethnic spirit continues to live and even thrive in the many Norwegian settlements throughout the United States. This book is a compilation of stories that first appeared in Mr. Steen's popular column in the then Brooklyn, New York-based newspaper, Norway Times. So, if you were unlucky enough to miss these wonderful stories the first time around, in that publication, then here's your chance to enjoy Americas slice of Norway from someone who has a love for both countries. To give the reader a better perspective of Mr. Steen's native Norway, he provi! des an insiders view of many little-known, but interesting places, customs and events. As for his new Norway, the heritage-commemorating activities and accomplishments of the Norwegian-Americans are reported with objectivity and a good measure of pride. We think you will agree that Roald Steen is a writer who is at home in either of the two Norways.
